Hydro 2003 - Croatia

TECHNICAL PROGRAMME

Hydropower development is moving into a new and very promising era, and our conference themes clearly reflect this renewed focus on the positive aspects of hydro, in relation to sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and social and economic development worldwide.

The programme sets off with presentations on the major role that future hydropower will play in the economies of countries such as: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Peru and the Nile basin countries of Africa. One session will focus specifically on the role and benefits of hydropower for the countries with transitional economies in southeast Europe, and will look at the considerable potential (for both new and refurbishment schemes) in this region.
Europe is always a good meeting point for those assembling from Asia, Australasia, Africa and the Americas. Croatia has been chosen as the venue this year to improve access for those from the eastern European and central Asian region.
Best practice in project implementation and new approaches to financing are underlying themes of the conference this year; presentations will give examples of good planning principles in relation to stakeholder involvement, environmental impact assessment, resettlement and preservation of cultural heritage, and public/private partnerships in financing.

The World Bank is strongly involved in this year's event, reflecting once again its renewed focus on hydropower development and dams (announced during its Energy Week 2003 Renewable Energy Forum, and confirmed by the adoption of its new Water Resources Sector Strategy - see Hydropower & Dams Issue 2, 2003). Presentations at HYDRO 2003 will give details of the World Bank's Infrastructure Action Plan following on from the WRSS, possible models for public/private partnerships, and plans for power trading in the Nile Basin countries.

The Asian Development Bank, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau and the European Investment Bank will also discuss their current approaches to hydro project financing, and ADB will outline its activities in the Mekong region, and also experience of stakeholder partnerships.

Best practice is also the theme of the seven sessions dealing with advances in technology. All of these are closely linked with improvements in efficiency, safety, economics and powerplant operation. Two sessions deal with turbines and associated hydromechanical equipment, one is devoted to generators and control systems, and others look at uprating and refurbishment, and improved maintenance techniques. There is greater emphasis this year on civil works, and also a special session on sedimentation management.

The Table gives an overview of events. For full details of the technical and social programmes, the technical excursion and study tour, see the following pages. The sessions will run in two parallel tracks, in the adjacent Ragusa and Orlando rooms.
