Hydro 2003 - Croatia

TECHNICAL EXCURSION

After the conclusion of the conference sessions on Thursday morning, participants were taken by coach to the City Café (Gradska Kavana) in the old town of Dubrovnik, where lunch will be served at approximately 13.00 hrs.
This elegant Café has terraces overlooking the picturesque harbour, on one side; on the other side the famous main street with its bell tower, Sponza Palace, the Church of St Blasius and the Rector's Palace are very nearby.
After lunch, there will be an opportunity to visit the 216 MW Dubrovnik powerplant, (located on the Adriatic coast, 15 km south of Dubrovnik, near to Cavtat). This plant, owned by Hrvatska Elektoprivreda, has been in service since 1965, operating for an average of 7000 h/year until it was damaged during the war, in October 1991. It has now been fully refurbished, and the equipment is being progressively upgraded and modernized.
HPP Dubrovnik is the furthest downstream in of a series of plants on the Trebisnijca river (the catchment area of this river and the system of hydro plants extends between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia). The whole system comprises: Bileca reservoir, impounded by Grancarevo dam, with the associated Trebinje 1 powerplant; Gorica dam and reservoir, with the Trebinje 2 powerplant, a 16.57 km headrace tunnel, surge shaft and penstock, and the Dubrovnik powerhouse and outlet system.
The underground powerhouse cavern, accessible through a 520 m-long tunnel, was designed for four units, but only two Francis units are installed so far. There will be a guided tour of the powerplant. Return to Cavtat by coach.
