Tolerability of societal risk criteria

Societal risk criteria expressed with the help of so-called F-N charts are the most widely used criteria by jurisdictions explicitly considering information about risk in dam safety decision making. In North America, the US Bureau of Reclamation chose to inform decisions about risk with the help of f-N charts. Differences between these two approaches are discussed in the paper and their impacts on risk evaluation outcomes are illustrated by two examples.
