A new design concept for improved arc fault containment

Internal arc faults in oil-filled power transformers can cause severe damage in a hydropower plant. In this paper, a technological framework is presented that can be used to understand, quantify and reduce the risk of such events. An example is shown of how this framework has been used to establish a new transformer housing design concept, which can sustain the structural integrity of a power transformer for a longer arc fault duration time than a traditional housing design would have allowed.
