Challenges and success during refurbishment of hydropower plants in Zambia

This paper describes the main challenges faced and success achieved during the refurbishment of the Lunsemfwa and Mulungushi schemes in central Zambia. The Mulungushi scheme is the oldest hydro plant in Africa, and has been operating since 1925. Key challenges included the remote locations of each scheme and interfacing new technology with old equipment, particularly given the lack of detailed civil and electro-mechanical drawings.
