Combating fresh water mussels at hydropower plants

Infestations of fresh water mussels have caused significant problems at hydro plants, clogging intakes, trashracks, penstocks, spiral casings and filters. This article takes a look at the nature and extent of the problem worldwide, from an engineering perspective, and discusses some of the ways being researched and used to combat adverse effects on hydro production.
