Dam safety and society in Vietnam: A new beginning?

Vietnam, a densely populated country with a major water resources development programme under way, is conscious of the need for rigorous dam safety standards and environmental/social safeguards. While much progress has been made in developing a policy framework and regulations, challenges remain, particularly in their implementation. The World Bank is now supporting the national hydropower development programme, and the planned Trung Son project will be a medium to reinforce the adoption of international good practice in dam safety, and in social and environment protection.
