Development and application of a fish-friendly turbine

Although hydropower is a clean source of energy, a serious concern continues to be the potential for fish passing through hydro turbines to be injured or killed. Increased survival of fish passing through turbines will enhance environmental performance and allow hydro to play a greater role in meeting the world’s needs for clean and renewable energy sources. This article reviews the development of a fish-friendly turbine in the USA, a field application of the system, and market potential for the future.
