Filling reservoirs by pumping could optimize the use of dams

The extensive use of pumping to fill reservoirs could optimize the use of rivers and favour large reservoirs off rivers, and dams at sea. The corresponding impacts on the environment would be reduced compared with traditional existing dams. It is foreseen by the authors that most dams constructed after 2040 may be linked with pumping.
