Flood management during construction of the Nam Theun 1 RCC dam

The Nam Theun 1 hydro plant is currently under construction on a build operate transfer (BOT) basis. The scheme is located at the downstream end of the 14 000 km² Nam Theun-Nam Kading river basin in central Lao PDR. This paper explains the hydraulic design of the construction stage to be reached by the RCC dam at the start of each rainy season and the design of the mitigation measures to avoid damage to the dam during overtopping. This analysis has been done using a combination of analytical methods, numerical simulations as well as physical model testing.
