Hydropower in Romania: current strategies and future projects

In the current context, where most new projects in central and eastern Europe must incorporate and achieve significant environmental standards, Hidroelectrica SA, Romania’s largest energy producer and provider of system services is implementing an ambitious plan for investment. The utility plans to complete ongoing refurbishment and modernization projects, and to start other new projects with a total estimated value of more than €600 million. The much needed new power producing facilities will achieve environmental standards that allow them to operate in conjunction with the EU Green Deal. This paper reports on how Hidroelectrica, owner of more than 6.4 GW of existing installed capacity, plans to invest in maintenance and state-of-the-art surveillance equipment across its portfolio.
