Local penstock resonance amplified generator power swings

Unacceptably high generator power swings and associated crashes and bangs in the draft tube were found to be caused by local resonance in the penstock branches leading to the two Francis turbines at the Rangipo power station in New Zealand. The resonance was excited by turbine draft tube pressure fluctuations. The authors describe investigations and the solution to the problem.
