Mpatamanga: A new approach for complex infrastructure development in nascent stage markets

In December 2019, the Government of Malawi (GOM) announced the completion of the early stage development works for its 350 MW Mpatamanga hydropower project, a milestone achieved only eight months after signing a joint development agreement (JDA) with IFC InfraVentures (World Bank Group), its co-development partner, at the World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, DC. This sets the stage for Malawi’s Public Private Partnership Commission to issue a competitive tender for a strategic sponsor to build, own, and operate the scheme in a PPP model.
