Planning and construction of the Allain Duhangan scheme, India

Challenges associated with logistics in the northern mountainous area of Himachal Pradesh, complex geology and the risk of avalanches, and extreme climatic conditions were among the issues to be tackled in the design and construction of the 192 MW Allain Duhangan powerplant in India. The construction of access roads, tunnels and the underground powerplant presented some particular difficulties, which are described here, together with an outline of lessons learned for future schemes in similar conditions.
