Promoting investment in Jamaica’s small hydro potential

A programme is underway to assess the feasibility of promising sites for small hydropower development, as part of the stategy to promote hydropower in deeping with Jamaica’s National Energy Policy (2009-30) . The aim of initiating several concurrent pre-feasibility and feasibility studies is to enhance the country’s energy security and efficiency, as part of a World Bank-funded project. Details are given here of some of the potential small hydro schemes which have been studied, and the role of hydropower in reducing Jamaica’s dependence on fossil fuel-based generation, while diversifying the nation’s energy mix.
