Stepwise screening and development of small hydro projects in Burundi

The Republic of Burundi has considerable potential for small hydropower development. In the 1980s a study of the hydropower potential was established, which shows an exploitable potential at 41 identified projects, with a total installed capacity of 300 MW. In the present study, a stepwise screening was carried out, the aim of which was to identify the most promising sites, develop two of them to feasibility level, and then take steps to begin implementing the projects.
