Strategic plan for hydropower development in the Congo basin

Central Africa has the highest hydropower potential of any region on the African continent. This paper presents the strategic plan for hydropower development, an electricity demand forecast, hydropower project selection criteria, and an overview of projects in the region that have been selected and promoted by the Central African Power Pool, together with the International Commission for the Congo–Oubangui–Sangha Basin (CICOS). Finally, from the visions developed by several institutions, estimation of costs are made to help countries promote the development of hydropower, to increase the status of renewable energy as a whole, and to contribute to mitigating the effect of climate change.
