The potential for hydro and other renewables in Indonesia

Electricity generation in Indonesia is planned to reach a total installed capacity of around 92 GW by 2020, with a diverse energy mix consisting of coal and other fossil fuels (mainly in Java, Madura and Bali), and a wide range of renewable sources in other areas. Hydro resources represent about 80 GW of the potential, which could be developed as large, small, mini or micro hydro schemes. This paper presents the substantial renewable energy potential outside Indonesia’s Jamali (Java, Madura and Bali) grid system. Studies show that if the available renewable energy sources, including a large proportion of hydro, were exploited, this would be sufficient to meet the country’s total electricity demand until the end of the 21st century.
