The role of pumped-storage in a pan-European supergrid

Originally designed mainly to cover peak loads, pumped-storage plants are today playing an important part in addressing challenges brought about by the deregulation of the electricity market and the substantial growth in wind and solar generating capacity. The author reviews the possibilities for a future European supergrid, and the advantages that pumped-storage plants could offer.
