The role of the Zeiskaya and Bureiskaya hydro plants during major flooding in mid-2013

Serious flooding occurred on the Amur river in Russia, between July and September this year. After outlining the history of flooding in the region and the consequences, the authors describe the role played by the Zeiskaya and Bureiskaya hydro stations (of JSC RusHydro) in mitigating the effects of the flood. Details are also given of the flood warning system which was in place in the region, and how this operated effectively, avoiding the loss of human life during the exceptional flood event.
