Upgrading pumped storage to variable speed: a case study

Pumped-storage plants with variable speed units offer greater power regulation in the pumping mode and a faster response to load changes on the power network than conventional pumped-storage plants. Technological developments of new variable speed machines, and their integration, have been discussed in previous publications. This paper discusses the technical challenges on the first project ever to convert a conventional unit (250 MW) to variable speed.
