Very high CFRDs: Behaviour and design features

CFRDs, acknowledged as inherently safe, have entered a new era, as they are being constructed to heights of around 200 m. In the light of construction experience, and some incidents of damage to major structures in recent years, the author reviews trends in design. This is based on a presentation given at the Third Symposium on CFRD Dams in Florianopolis, Brazil, which was dedicated to J. Barry Cooke.
