Developments in Kaplan turbines since Porto Primavera

The last hydro project in Brazil with an installed capacity of more than 1 GW using Kaplan turbines was the Porto Primavera scheme. As Brazil’s energy plans again appear to call for low head plants of that size, or greater, and as around 10 GW of new large Kaplan capacity (>50 MW/unit) has been subsequently added worldwide since Porto Primavera, it seems timely to examine some of the recent trends in the market.
