Management of post-tensioned rock anchors for dams

Post-tensioning tendons or rock anchors are widely used within the hydropower industry, mainly to increase the stability of concrete dams. As a result of the overall ageing of the concrete dam population in Sweden, regulatory changes over time, and the future need for environmental measures at hydropower plants, the use of rock anchors is increasing with time. Research has been undertaken to establish guidelines for a management system for the use of rock anchors. This paper presents a summary of the results from some of the studies on which the recommendations are based. The emphasis here is on ageing management regarding anchor force measurements, and the inspection of anchors.
