The mainstay of the hydroelectric industry since the start has been the turbine head specific speed curve. In this paper, the technical and historical background of the traditional Francis turbine head specific curve is reviewed. The limitations of the data used in the curve are examined and recommendations are given as to its use, both during the feasibility study and specification stages of a project.
