WAPDA invites EOIs for rehabilitation of Dargai in Pakistan

Expressions of interest are invited by 22 January for qualified contractors to carry out the rehabilitation of the 20 MW plant.

Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), with the financial support of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), invites expressions of interest by 30 January 2022 from qualified contractors to carry out the rehabilitation of the 20 MW Dargai (Malakand-II) hydropower station in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The contracted work aims to increase the installed capacity of the plant to 22 MW, modernize balance of plant, switchyard and peripheral equipment by refurbishing existing equipment or replacing it entirely, and rectify technical issues in the power channel, sand trap and forebay by updating the civil structures. As a result of wear and tear, the capacity of the low-head, run-of-river station located at Dargai, Malakand District, on the Swat River Canal has been reduced. The plant, which is equipped with four 5 MW units, and has a design annual output of 162 GWh, was commissioned in December 1952. The AFD has provided a loan and grant totalling €52 million to WAPDA for the rehabilitation of the Dargai and 1 MW Chitral run-of-river plant on the Luthko river, near the city of Chitral, also in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
