The sustainability of concrete dams

The green transition, new legislation and the impacts of anthropogenic climate change require a pressing discussion and review of sustainability in concrete dam design and construction, with a focus on recommendations to significantly reduce the GHG emissions from concrete dams. In 2017, ICOLD Technical Committee D on Concrete Dams proposed that a Bulletin should be drafted on ‘The sustainability of concrete dams’ with particular emphasis on the reduction of the carbon footprint of concrete dams. This paper summarises some of the key work being undertaken.
