The use of SLAM software during ROV inspections at dams

The author introduces the advantages of using the recently developed VSLAM software during ROV underwater inspections at dams and hydro plants, compared with traditional diving methods. The combined use of stereo cameras, INS/DVL integration, and VSLAM can overcome the inherent limitations of divers and sonar equipment, delivering safer, more cost-effective, and scalable solutions for hydropower dam inspections. This can also support predictive maintenance strategies and scalable inspection programmes.
