Adaptation of small earthfill dams to climate change in Burkina Faso

Exceptional rainfall events between 2009 and 2012 caused significant damage and dam failures in Burkina Faso. In response to these events, a pilot project to reduce the vulnerability of small earth dams to the effects of climate change was established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources, Sanitation and Food Safety. Measures to improve the resilience of new and existing dams to the effects of increasing flood and natural hazard events are reported.
