African hydro schemes in the CDM pipeline

It is recognized that hydropower will play a key role in Africa’s socio-economic development, and a vast potential remains to be developed. The CDM has proved to be successful in generating emissions reduction projects in many developing countries. However, Africa’s share of CDM transactions is still relatively low, at less than 1 per cent. This article looks at the CDM projects at various stages of preparation in various African countries, and outlines the advantages the CDM process could offer for Africa.
