Applied measurement methods for strain, temperature, and excitation on rotors of hydro generators

The rotor of an electrical machine works in a uniquely harsh environment, and where precise measurements and reliable communication are challenged by mechanical, thermal, and electromagnetic effects. For these types of measurement, installation of equipment directly on the rotor is necessary, and in some cases may be the only option. Instances requiring such measurements include: validation and refinement of calculations; verification of performance through testing, including design optimisation; and, the on-line monitoring of rotor parameters. This paper presents representative examples of rotor measurement applications, emphasizing practical implementation details and versatile equipment options across different measurement cases and types
