Challenges in constructing the headrace tunnel for Tapovan Vishnugad, India

A headrace tunnel nearly 12 km long will be required for the 520 MW Tapovan Vishnugad hydro scheme in northern India. Complex geology and the remote site have presented a number of challenges for the design and construction of the tunnel, which will be bored by TBM. This paper reviews the criteria which led to the choice of the TBM, the overall design philosophy, and the status of construction by the end of 2008.
