Design, construction and performance of the tunnels of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project

More than 110 km of tunnels were designed and constructed as part of Phases 1A and 1B of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and they have been operating for more than 25 and 18 years respectively. Phase 2 of the project is now proceeding into construction and will add the 38 km Polihali transfer tunnel. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the design, construction and performance of the concrete- lined tunnels of the project and confirms their suitability for long-term secure hydraulic operations without undue maintenance.
