Development and construction of the 406 MW Chaglla project in Peru

The main feature of the Chaglla project is a 202 m-high CFRD dam on the Huallaga river, which will convey water through a headrace tunnel on the left bank and down through the surface penstocks to a 400 MW surface powerhouse. A 6 MW auxiliary plant at the toe of the dam will exploit the environmental flow for additional generation. This paper describes the main features of the project, the challenges faced during financing, design and construction issues and, how environmental and social matters have been effectively managed.
