Distributed fibre optic sensing in Swedish dams and tailing storage facilities

Distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) is now widely applied both in hydropower dams and at tailing storage facilities (TSF) as it has the great advantage of providing high resolution information throughout an entire dam. The first DFOS application was seepage flow monitoring, using temperature measurements. However, the same cables can also be used for detection of movement (with strain measurements) and material changes (with seismic measurements).
