Enhancing excitation control of the synchronous generators at Nalubaale, Uganda

Conventional thyristors and GTO thyristor switched converters belong to a family of devices called flexible AC transmission systems controllers, mainly used for solving power system steady state-control problems. Over the last two decades, the enhancement of system stability using GTO thyristor switched technologies (second generation FACTS) has been extensively investigated. This paper describes the design of a GTO thyristor model by using Matlab/simulink, and the simulation of the implementation of this GTO thyristor as a control element in a six pulse converter circuit of a synchronous generator excitation system. The response of specific parameters of the synchronous machine with respect to power system conditions was also investigated.
