Hydraulic-structural development and prototype experience of high-head Francis turbines

Some key aspects of the hydraulic and mechanical development of high-head Francis units are described, and it is demonstrated that as a result of refinements in design processes in recent years, numerical methods now make it possible to predict the dynamic behaviour as early as the design phase. Recent prototype experiences are presented and compared with the predictions of numerical analysis and model testing.
