Hydrokinetic turbines for rural electrification: The case of the Lower Volta and Island Communities, Ghana

The Lower Volta and its surrounding Island communities in Ghana present a compelling case for the implementation of hydrokinetic turbines aimed at rural electrification. Currently, in the Island communities of the Lower Volta, solar systems with battery storage are used to provide electricity. This study seeks to explore the possibility of installing these hydrokinetic turbines in the free-flowing river of the Lower Volta to deliver a clean, dependable, and economical power supply, promoting economic growth, enhancing the quality of life, and facilitating sustainable development for the Island communities.
