Increasing the minimum residual flow at Montsalvens dam, Switzerland

The 52 m-high Montsalvens dam is one of the oldest arch dams in Europe. To meet ecological requirements of a new Swiss Federal Act on the Protection of Waters, the environmental flow at the dam toe had to be increased from 130 to 500 l/s. This paper describes the options that were investigated as well as the application of the chosen solution.
