Innovative duckbill spillway to boost water supply

The Garden Route dam project is a prime example of how small, low-cost, upgrades can result in major benefits for local scale water supply systems. The installation of innovate spillway at the dam, together with an associated higher water level, allowed the dam’s storage capacity to be increased by some 25 per cent. Despite the simplicity of the idea, a number of technical challenges had to be overcome to achieve the desired outcome.
