Small and medium dams often outnumber major facilities, while resources for monitoring, maintenance, and periodic safety review remain limited. After a review of international practice, this paper presents a practical, risk-informed workflow to expand safety assessments. This is based on international guidelines and ICOLD Bulletins, as well as the Mexican Standard NMX-AA-175-SCFI-2015, FEMA guidelines and various dam safety management and instrumentation manuals.
