Nant de Drance will secure reliable peak power for the Swiss grid

To secure an additional source of reliable and flexible peak power in Switzerland, Alpiq, the Swiss federal railway system (SBB) and the Valais electricity company (FMV) are constructing the Nant de Drance underground pumped-storage plant. About CHF 0.9 billion is being invested in the scheme, scheduled for completion in 2016. The existing Emosson and Vieux Emosson reservoirs will be key elements of the project, and new civil works will mainly be underground, minimizing the environmental impact of the scheme.
