Potential from retrofitting non-powered dams for hydro production

A large number of the world’s dams and reservoirs are built for purposes other than hydropower production. Retrofitting of non-powered dams with hydropower generating facilities requires only small interventions compared with the construction of an entirely new dam and power plant. This study has quantified the retrofitting potential of 13 existing non-powered dams in the Guadalquivir basin in southern Spain, by modelling the basin without interfering with the present water uses. An economic analysis has found that retrofitting five of the dams to be economically feasible and competitive with other renewable energy developments.
