Pumped storage in a topographically challenged world

This paper describes the utilization of modern tunnelling methods, using tunnel boring machines in combination with conventional pumped storage technology, to provide closed-loop long-duration energy storage in topographically challenged areas of the USA. Preliminary studies indicate that this concept is technically feasible, economically competitive and environmentally benign.
