RCC dam construction in Indonesia: The case of Batang Toru dam

As Indonesia focuses on increasing the share of hydropower in its energy mix, there is a corresponding trend to build more RCC dams in the country. This article focuses on the 74 m-high Batang Toru RCC dam, under construction since November 2023 in Northern Sumatera. Challenges for the design and implementation of the scheme are described, including its location in a seismic area, within a dense rainforest. Foundation treatment and safety aspects are outlined. Batang Toru will impound a reservoir for a 510 MW hydro plant.
