Sustainable hydro for north-central Nigeria: Prospects and challenges

This study examines the challenges and opportunities for sustainable hydropower development in north-central Nigeria, a region with significant development potential. The region’s hydropower systems face environmental pressures, including altered hydrological regimes, sedimentation, and climate change, which threaten their long-term viability. Socio-economic challenges, such as displacement and the resettlement of communities, inconsistent power supply, and inadequate compensation, also hinder the sector’s resilience. Technical issues, including ageing infrastructure, together with a weak regulatory framework further exacerbate the problems. This study recommends a multi-faceted approach to address these issues.
