The application of organic composite materials in hydraulic turbines

Hydro turbine components must clearly be designed, manufactured and assembled within strict standards and criteria, to ensure the best possible performance during operation. This paper discusses the possible advantages which the increased use of composite materials could offer (such as reduced weight compared with conventional steel, and less specialized equipment for assembly, so hence easier installation in remote areas). However the authors stress the need for on-going research, for example, regarding moisture and wear resistance. It is demonstrated that competitive technical solutions could be available to the market without a reduction in equipment reliability.
