The main dam of the 253 MW Toachi-Pilatón scheme, now under construction in Ecuador, presented a number of design challenges, for example the complex layout of the tunnels and galleries. This paper focuses on geotechnical studies, stability analyses carried out for the dam, and hydraulic model tests conducted for the flood discharge works.
