As part of an overall strategy to increase and maximize the use of renewable energy, the Czech utility CEZ began a project at the beginning of the new millennium to increase efficiency, and where possible capacity, at its hydropower plants. In view of the limited possibilities to construct new major hydro schemes, increasing the operating range of hydro units, and in some cases uprating capacity, are ideal solutions, and have the benefit of contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
