Egypt to relaunch tender for Attaqa pumped-storage project

Egypt plans to relaunch a tender for a contract to develop the country’s first pumped-storage plant at Mount Attaqa, following a contractor’s failure to secure funding for the project. Indian, Chinese, and European companies have shown initial interest in the scheme, according to local reports.

The 2400 MW Attaqa project is planned to be constructed at the northern end of the Red Sea mountain range, approximately 15 km west of Suez.

Meanwhile, the state has completed studies to establish two further pumped-storage projects with capacities of up to 2000 MW. The two projects in Qena and Luxor have combined investments of US$ 2.5 billion. Egypt aims for renewable energy to reach 42 per cent of its electricity generation mix by 2035.

Financial close for Eswatini’s first privately financed hydro project

African Clean Energy Developments (ACED) and Energy Infrastructure Management Services (EIMS Africa) have closed financing and commenced construction on the 13.5 MW Lower Maguduza hydropower project in Eswatini, the first privately financed hydropower project in the country. Standard Bank announced on 3 February the close of a ZAR 567 million (US$ 30.3 million) deal to fund the run-of-river project, which will help ensure a cleaner, more reliable and affordable supply of electricity for Eswatini by strengthening its security of supply through the reduction of reliance on imported electricity generated from coal in favour of domestic renewable power.

UK’s BII supports hydropower development in Nepal

British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution, has signed a US$ 15 million trade loan agreement with Sanima Bank of Nepal to develop renewable energy and manufacturing in Nepal. The credit line will strengthen Sanima Bank’s trade finance activities, funding the import of capital goods for renewable energy projects with a focus on hydropower, as well as manufacturing, food, and agriculture, BII announced.
